Daisuke Toyoda, Senior Vice President of Woven by Toyota, and Toyota Times' Yuta Tomikawa are neighbors in Woven City. Here, these two Weavers sit down to discuss life in the city and the future they envision for it.
Daisuke Toyoda, Senior Vice President (SVP) of Woven by Toyota (WbyT), and Toyota Times News’ Yuta Tomikawa are both Weavers, or residents of Woven City.
The pair have known each other since the early days of the Woven City project, before Tomikawa had even joined Toyota, and have remained connected through the project.
How do they view Woven City today? Listen in on their conversation here.
Since the official launch of Woven City last autumn, demonstration trials have been underway across the city, giving children opportunities to interact naturally with robots and the latest technology.
While there have been times when residents were woken up in the middle of the night and traffic signals seemed stuck on red, this “ever-evolving city” is a place where the future fabric of life is being shaped. At the Kakezan 2026 event in April, SVP Toyoda described Woven City as “a city where it’s okay to fail.”
SVP Toyoda was one of the founding members of Toyota Research Institute-Advanced Development (TRI-AD), the predecessor of WbyT, and has led the Woven City project from the start. As announced in a recent release from WbyT, he will be returning to Toyota Motor Corporation to take on a new role.
In this conversation, he also shares his thoughts for the colleagues who will carry the project forward.
Although his next chapter will take him to the production floor, he plans to continue living in Woven City, meaning there will be plenty more neighborly chats between Weavers to come.
