This September, Chairman Akio Toyoda attended Toyota's U.S. national dealer meeting for the first time in two years. In an unscripted chat with Yuta Tomikawa, he delves deep into what the event means for Toyota and himself.
Next up: a camping podcast?
Toyoda
I’m not sure whether it will be next time, but these days we are inundated with information. I might get in trouble for putting it this way, but more and more reporting chases a predetermined storyline, which makes it hard for listeners to know what to trust.
I’m certainly not saying that only Toyota Times is right. It’s simply a chance for the people inside Toyota to share what the people inside Toyota think.
This is reality as Toyota sees it, without any falsehoods or contrived stories.
Listeners need to feel that this information is authentic and be able to make up their own minds.
Through Toyota Times Sports and Toyota Times News, we share many different aspects of what Toyota does, but I want to convey what the company is thinking from a business perspective.
I’m not saying that this is what’s right, nor am I trying to stir up ideological conflicts. However, I think it would be nice if those of us immersed in the auto industry had a platform where we could properly convey what we are working towards, what the current challenges are, and what we are doing to overcome them. That’s why I think something like Toyota Times Business might be a worthwhile addition.
Tomikawa
Thank you very much. To be honest, I was talking about something else…
Toyoda
Oh, I’m sorry (laughs).
Tomikawa
I wanted to talk about Fuji Speedway.
Toyoda
What about Fuji Speedway?
Staff
About camping at Fuji Speedway next time…
Tomikawa
I heard that you suggested recording a podcast there, which I wanted to mention, but you just revealed something much bigger (laughs). We’ll make sure to make it happen.
Toyoda
But let’s do the camping as well.
Toyoda
Several racers have been suggesting that I should camp solo.
Tomikawa
By yourself?!
Toyoda
Yes, all alone. It sounded good to me. Not that you’d leave me to myself anyway, right?
Tomikawa
We’ll let you go as solo as possible.
Toyoda
As solo as possible, and while we’re at it we could record Toyota Times in front of the campfire.
Tomikawa
Great.
Toyoda
I’ll even make you some coffee.
Tomikawa
Thank you, that sounds wonderful.
That’s what I wanted to ask about, but you had a far bigger surprise. Thank you. I look forward to making both of these happen.
Thank you for your time today.
Toyoda
Thank you.
