Can Dreams Build Cars of the Future? A Look at Art Contest Prizewinners and Comments from Judges

2024.09.30

The winners of the Dream Car Art Contest have finally been announced. What promising appraisals did we see for children from around the world?

The Dream Car Art Contest was held for the 17th time since it began in 2004. This year, over 710,000 entries were submitted from 90 countries and regions. Last time, we covered the final selection. Now, the decisions have finally been announced, and we can reveal both the judges’ comments and the joyful voices of the winners.

First, the winner in the age 7 and under category is a work that expresses fresh and childlike imagination. The use of color and decoration shows real freedom of expression, while from a realistic perspective, the car shape is a novel idea. Judge and art director Chie Morimoto said, “The way it’s a dream rooted in familiarity is perfect for Category 1 (age 7 and under).”

Of special note is the new award created this year, the “Let’s Change the Future of Cars Award.” This award was judged based on the aspects of concept and design as well as how these expressed the way the car would change the future. The winning entry embodies the wish for a car that never has accidents and is full of all the things the artist wants to do in a car.

Regarding this work, Simon Humphries, Senior General Manager of Design, said, “This person was not just thinking about how to use it, but how it was going to change mobility in the future. And that’s a fantastic thing to do.”

The Dream Car Art Contest was full of surprising ideas. Simon Humphries had this to say about the significance of holding the event:

“The future is all decided by how creative we are. In this type of competition, we are embracing children’s creativity, inventiveness, and entrepreneurial spirit. It has real meaning for people all over the world.”

Take a look at this week’s program to see the dreams of children that represent the first steps toward a new future.
