The Moveum Yokohama was unveiled at Yamashita Pier on Yokohama's waterfront. What did Chairman Akio Toyoda feel in this immersive art space of images and sound?
How deeply can people be immersed in art?
The Moveum Yokohama by Toyota Group has opened on Yamashita Pier in Yokohama.
The venue features immersive digital art that envelops visitors through images, sound, and spatial design, creating a fully sensory experience.
Inside the museum, the works of two artists from Vienna’s Fin de Siècle golden age, Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, unfold across the vast warehouse space through sweeping projections and music.
By making full use of the building’s structure — its walls, pillars, and open expanse — the experience feels less like viewing art and more like stepping inside it.
Before the opening, Chairman Akio Toyoda spoke about the surprising connections between Yokohama and Toyota.
Yokohama was Sakichi Toyoda’s port of departure when bringing the automatic loom to the world, the place where Kiichiro Toyoda began his journey to see the West, and the place from which the first-generation Crown was initially exported to the United States.
Yokohama was always part of Toyota’s key moments of connection with the world.
So why did Toyota, described by Chairman Toyoda as a company that “doesn’t really give off a cultural vibe,” open an art facility in Yokohama, a city where it has such deep ties?
And when Chairman Toyoda experienced the exhibition firsthand, what did he feel? What drew his eye, and what spontaneous words escaped him? His candid reactions are captured on video.
There is one more immersive experience at the venue.
Actor Tomoko Yamaguchi’s project “LISTEN.” brings together the “sounds of the Earth” she has recorded around the world over the past decade, which she hopes to pass on to future generations.
To explore the origins of the project, Yuta Tomikawa traveled to Hungary to meet Yamaguchi and uncover the story behind its beginnings.
Without relying on explanations, visitors simply surrender themselves to sound. Here, too, experience takes center stage.
The Moveum Yokohama is a new challenge begun by Toyota in the port city of Yokohama.
A new way to encounter art. What does it mean to truly be moved? Discover the answer in the video. Both exhibitions run until March 31.
